Forgotten subscriptions have a specific shape: a free trial that converted to paid without a second thought, an app downloaded for a one-time project that's still billing monthly, a service you switched away from without canceling the old one, or a family/shared plan where the original reason for splitting it disappeared months ago.
Where to actually look
The most reliable method isn't memory — it's your bank or card statement, scanned line by line for anything recurring rather than trying to recall it from scratch. Small, round-ish charges ($4.99, $9.99, $14.99) that repeat monthly are the usual signature. App store subscription pages (both Apple and Google have a dedicated view) are the second place to check, since some subscriptions bill through the store rather than directly.
What to do once you find one
Not every forgotten subscription needs to go — some turn out to still be worth it once you're reminded they exist. The point of the exercise isn't cutting, it's converting an invisible cost into a visible one you're actually choosing, rather than one that's just been running on autopilot.
Once a recurring charge is entered and tracked going forward, it stops being something you have to remember to check — it just shows up as part of the monthly total automatically.
